Welcome to a brand new feature on this blog! I am going to post videos containing tips, tricks and techniques (the home-cooking essentials) which I use all the time in the kitchen and which I hope many of you may find useful.
I am starting off today with a video showing how to cut up a whole raw chicken into 8 pieces. It is nearly always much cheaper to buy a whole chicken and cut it up, rather than buying pre-cut portions of the same quality. You really do get an awful lot more meat for your money. You can either use (and freeze) the portions separately or use them for a casserole, as I will be doing later today.
I hope you enjoy this new feature. Let me know what you think in the comments section and, if you have any suggestions or requests for future videos, please do let me know…
Love it! Thank you so much for this – I wouldn't have gone looking for how to do it but will try it at the weekend.
My sister gave up being a vegetarian because she was moving to the Azores for a year and realised she'd go pretty hungry not eating meat. She decided to start with chicken curry and bought a whole chicken to dismember because it was cheaper than buying bits. If only she'd been able to watch this video before she started she might have been a bit less traumatised by the whole experience! (PS I really like this new feature)
This is an excellent idea and a great tip to start with! Really well explained and doesn't look as difficult as I'd have expected it to be! Thanks Nick!
What a cracking idea – watching you makes me believe I can do that too. Great stuff Nick!!
Simple in expert hands but very easy to follow!!
Brilliant. So informative and clear. Love it!
what bits did Archie help you with?
Hi Liz, Archie wasn't with me when I did this. I intend this new "tips, tricks and techniques" feature to not always feature him. It will basically show some of the things I do in the kitchen without him – the prepping mainly. I am happy for him to hold and use a small knife but letting him use an 8 inch chef's knife to chop a chicken doesn't seem a good idea to me!!!
Have never done this ever as I wouldn't have known where to start, oh if I had I have known it was so straight forward I've saved a fortune! Definately going to give it a go. Thanks Mr x
Great idea for a video- have already added a whole chicken to my weekly shop so I can give this a try!
Thank you & keep the ideas coming! PS Have tried a few of your recipes (Sticky Ribs, 'Bluebelly' and Lemon cake and they have become real family favourites- thanks!!)
Great stuff Nick, and because the video can be played again and again, everyone can now become an expert!!
Nick…you have such a great presentation style…you're destined for TV! This was exceptionally helpful and you're even inspiring me to get out of my slump and get back in the kitchen. Very well done you…can't wait for the next one! Are you designing an "app" so you can be like Nigella??
Love it – I joint chicken occasionally and inevitably end up baffled by various online guides full of jargon. (Parson’s nose? Oysters?!)
You show how quick and straightforward it ought to be!
Brilliant! I never thought it would be so easy. I've just recently discovered your blog and it has been life-changing – no longer do I ply my toddler with pre-dinner snacks and teletubbies to keep her out of the way while I cook. She's up their with me helping, and then eating everything up too – thank you so much!
I did it… think I may need a sharper knife. Found it tricky to cut through the joints, though expect practice helps. Think I cut through bone at one point when doing the legs, does that matter? The results picture: http://yfrog.com/gzdzmxwj
Now time to make some chicken recipes from your book (I have the Kindle version)
