You may have noticed that it has been a little quiet this week on the blog. I have basically been in what can only be described as a writing bunker, ploughing through writing my first book.
As you may have read previously here, it will contain 100 great recipes and is being entirely devised and written by myself (with a little willing help in the kitchen too of course!). No ghost writers, no food consultants – just me, my pen and paper, my kitchen and my laptop.
I’ll be honest, I maybe slightly underestimated the sheer amount of work which would go into creating this book. The first stage of honing down the list of recipes took about 8 weeks. I had to come up with well over 100 dishes and whittle them down. And once I had whittled them down, with the invaluable support of my editor at Hodder, Nicky Ross, we then whittled them down again. And again. This ultimately meant creating another 25 new recipes.
I thought that getting the recipe list would be the most time-consuming part of the project but I was very wrong. I love writing – and I especially love food writing – but the time taken to get the recipes down on paper has surprised me. My main problem is that I am a perfectionist and I want every word to be right. I also need to ensure that all the recipes read well and, of course, actually work and taste delicious. And when I say “work”, I mean they have to work in the same way as the recipes you are used to on the blog. They must be easy, foolproof, toddler-proof, fresh and tasty. Any which look too complex, or “cheffy”, immediately get re-worked. And re-worked again!
So where am I at then? Well, I have 65 recipes written up and I feel like I am close to breaking the back of the project. I am hoping to get the last 35 written up by the very beginning of June.
That will leave me four weeks until my deadline of 30th of June to write all the other parts of the book, including the all-important introductions.
So please accept my apologies that I am a little quiet on the blog at the moment. It is no exaggeration to say that I am working from first thing in the morning until the early hours, every single day at the moment – all in the hope of producing a cook book I can be proud of and that you can all enjoy.
The videos themselves take in total 2 days to produce (due to the fact that I am not a professional video editor) and my tight deadlines just hasn’t allowed me that time this last week. There will be a video coming up this week though, probably towards Thursday/Friday.
Thank you for your patience and I hope that you continue to enjoy all the other videos on the site while I juggle my writing commitments with producing new videos for you.
Thanks for reading and for continuing to visit the blog.
